Rejections, appeals and late applications

The most common reasons are administrative: uncertified or unreadable documents, a missing ID copy, the application fee not paid, an incomplete online form, applying after the closing date, or not meeting a subject-specific minimum (for example Mathematics Level 5) even though the overall APS is high enough.

Published APS figures are minimums, not guarantees. Programmes with limited places (medicine, veterinary science, teaching, nursing) rank applicants and admit from the top down, so the effective cut-off is often several points above the published minimum.

Contact the admissions office in writing as soon as you receive the outcome — most institutions allow an appeal within 14 to 30 days. State your student/application number, the exact reason given, and attach evidence that addresses it (corrected documents, improved final results, or a re-mark result). An appeal only works if something has changed or an error was made.

Some institutions open a short late window after the main deadline, usually only for programmes with space left. Late windows are shown on each institution page where they exist. Places go quickly, so apply on the first day of the window.

Look at institutions with rolling or later intakes: Unisa and most private colleges enrol later, and TVET colleges usually accept applications close to the start of the year and again for mid-year trimesters. A Higher Certificate is also a legitimate route — pass it and you can bridge into a diploma or degree.

Only some institutions and programmes require the National Benchmark Test — UCT, UWC, Wits health sciences and several others do. Each course listing on Varsitycheck shows whether an NBT is required. Book early: test dates fill up before the application deadline.

Every institution page shows the official source link and the date the entry was last verified against it. Institutions do change dates mid-cycle, so always confirm on the official page before you rely on a deadline.
