How to check your application status

Each university runs its own applicant portal. Check yours at least weekly — outstanding documents are the most common reason an application stalls.

UCT

UCT applicant self-service portal

  1. 1Sign in with the student number and PIN emailed to you within about two weeks of applying.
  2. 2Open 'Application status' to see whether documents are outstanding.
  3. 3Upload missing NSC results or NBT scores directly in the portal — incomplete files are not assessed.

Typical response time: First outcomes from August–September; most final decisions after matric results in January.

Wits

Wits self-service applicant portal

  1. 1Log in with your person number and password from your acknowledgement email.
  2. 2Check 'My applications' for each programme choice separately — outcomes differ per choice.
  3. 3Watch for a request for additional documents; Wits pauses assessment until they arrive.

Typical response time: Outcomes usually from September onwards, with firm offers finalised January after final results.

Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch student portal (my.sun.ac.za)

  1. 1Activate your student number and sign in to the student portal.
  2. 2Review 'Admission status' plus your separate residence and bursary applications.
  3. 3Keep your contact details current — Stellenbosch sends offers by email and SMS.

Typical response time: Conditional offers from September; final admission confirmed once January NSC results are loaded.

Timelines are typical for recent cycles and can shift — always confirm on the official institution portal.

What to do while you wait

Waiting is not a plan. Use the months between submitting and hearing back to build a safety net.

Backup applications

  • Apply to at least two more institutions that are still open — universities of technology and colleges often accept later.
  • Include one programme with an APS comfortably below your score so you have a certain option.
  • Keep your NSFAS or bursary applications active for every institution you applied to, not just your first choice.
  • Save your certified documents as one PDF pack so a late application takes minutes, not days.

Gap year options

  • Upgrade weak matric subjects through a second-chance or adult matric programme to lift your APS for 2028.
  • Take a bridging or higher certificate course that articulates into a degree the following year.
  • Do a learnership, internship or short skills course — paid experience that strengthens a future application.
  • Volunteer or work while saving for registration fees and residence deposits.
